Bernardo F. Fernandez, age 84, a 56 year resident of Ross, Ohio, passed away September 1, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Havana, Cuba on January 1, 1929, while his parents, Bernardo of Rios, Orense (Spain) and Amalia (Fernandez) Fernandez of Castrelo de Abajo, Orense (Spain) were immigrating to the United States. They settled in a small coal mining town of Monclo, West Virginia. Ben was a 1947 graduate of Sharples (WV) High School. On January 27, 1951, in Madison, West Virginia, he was united in marriage to Florence Ada Lowe (of Panther, West Virginia). Ben was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War from 1951-53. He was employed for 21 years by Proctor & Gamble, Miami Valley Laboratories, retiring in 1994. He was involved with numerous school and community activities as a MRAA coach for baseball, was Elda Elementary's first P.T.O. President, Butler County Basketball Referee and as 49 year veteran of Boy Scout Troop 923 where he served as Scoutmaster for 9.5 years from 1967-76. He was most proud to have four sons and four grandsons achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Ben was a 56 year member of the First Baptist Church of Ross, where he was involved in the past as a church trustee, church softball leagues, and especially enjoyed his church bowling leagues and his senior group/Sunday school class. Ben was an avid traveler where he especially loved family camping. Since the 1950‘s you could find him and his family at Ormond, Miami, and Myrtle Beaches. He especially enjoyed time spent with Ada and family in Myrtle Beach, at their beach getaway in the Lakewood Camping Resort. He is survived by six children Linda (Wayne) Bero of Glen Dale, West Virginia; Paula (Kathy) and her husband, Paul Dunn of Blythewood, South Carolina; Charles Fernandez and his wife Linda of Ross, Ohio; Paul Fernandez and his wife Regina of Ross, Ohio; Rick Fernandez of Bevis, Ohio; and Ron Fernandez of Ross, Ohio; two brothers, Joe (Jeanette) of Roseville, Michigan and Frank (Betty) of Amherst, Ohio; 8 grandchildren, Kimberly (Bero) Rennick, Kristina (Dunn) Johnson, Paul Dunn Jr., Pete Fernandez, Ryan Fernandez, Brittany Fernandez, Sam Fernandez, and Brandon Fernandez; 4 great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Preston, Alexander, & Harper. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada, in 1994. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Charles C. Young Funeral Home, 4032 Hamilton-Cleves Road, Ross, Ohio (www.CharlesYoungFuneralHome.com). Funeral services will be Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Shawn Crisman officiating. Burial will follow at the Venice Cemetery in Ross.
